CAN WRINKLES AFFECT EMOTIONAL PERCEPTIONS

Wrinkles on someone’s face may make it difficult to judge his or her emotions, a study suggests.

Participants in this particular study were asked to rate the level of emotion shown on 64 photographs of faces.

Despite all the faces being photographed with completely neutral expressions, the older faces with wrinkles were judged to have sad or angry expressions.

Facial wrinkles can cause the corners of the mouth to drop, the eyelifts to drop and the forehead to display frown lines. These may cause a face be misconceived as angry or sad said researcher Carlos Garrido, at Penn State University.

This general misperception, particularly by younger observers can lead to feel the person is sad or angry and unnecessarily create a negative reaction.

The effect wrinkles may have on facial expressions is purely that – the effect of the wrinkles, not an actual emotional state.

The appearance of facial wrinkles can also encourage us to seek cosmetic surgery to make ourselves feel better.

The good news is that in most cases we do not need to seek risky cosmetic surgical procedures.
